Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit itself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and the One who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the One intercedes for the saints according to God. (Romans 8:26-27) Beyond the visceral cry, “Help!” it can be hard to find the words for prayer.

To Those Around Me

I wrote these back in the mid-80's. My father was diagnosed with melanoma while I was in college; my mother with breast cancer while I was in seminary. This was my response after her diagnosis. He lived 20 more years; she, 30 more years. Yes, my parents have cancer. BOTH my parents now have cancer. And maybe they will die, But maybe they won’t. I don’t know. I just don’t know. As a TNBC survivor, a cardiac survivor, and a retired hospice chaplain, I want to offer some positive reflections for those on the journey of finding room to live with and after a life-threatening illness.

As an ordained clergy I come from a predominately Christian perspective; however hospice has given me a broader perspective and appreciation of other traditions so I will draw from them as well.
